A Clinical Observation on Empyema in Infancy and Childhood

Abstract
Sixty-two rases of empyema in infancy and childhood, admitted to Pediatric Department of the National Medical Center over the period from 1960 to 1968, are presented
1) The total incidence of empyema among the uses of pneumonia was 10.6%. Analysis of the yeraly prevalence revealed 18.4% in 1961.
2) The 35 cases of them were male and rest was female.
3) The most frequent age group was in infancy, which was accounted to 29.05vo.
4) The age incidence showed 0^-1 year to be most commonly affected (18 cases, 29.05?lo) and 45 cases (72.6%) were under the 6 years of age.
The youngest age was 16 days old male.
5) Highest seasonal incidence was in winter (Jan., Feb.) and spring (Apr., May) in its order.
6) The Iocation of empyema was 37 cases (59.7%) in right side and 24 cases (38.7%) in left side. Only one case was in both.
6) The commonest causative organism were Staphylococcus aureus (55.0%). The others were Diplococci pneumoniae (13.05vo), Streptocooci (3.2%), Tubercle bacilli (3.25vo) Hemophilus influenza was found in one case. The most common causative organism was Staphylococcus aureus (15 cases) in 01 year according to age distribution.
7) Staphylococci were most sensitive to methicillin (100%) but resistant to penicillin (47. 1%), sulfathiazol (47.0%), tetracycline (40.5%).
8) The mortality rate was 16. 1% (11 uses) and the five cases occurred under the 1 year of age group.
